Jumpcut: Minimalist Clipboard Buffering for OS X

When multi-tasking goes wrong  - cutting the last item into clipboard oblivion – but maybe this will help:

Trying out this new app.  The idea is great, we’ll see how it goes.

Next day, February 10, 2011: LOVE IT – and just discovered the hot key which brings up the bezel: control+option+V  Excellent.  Also, went into system preferences > Accounts and added it as a login item.  (It doesn’t appear in the dock when running (although you could drop it in) so I did it this way).

February 21, 2011: Love it even MORE – it has enhanced my workflow as I can now do sequential copies and recover the contents for pasting at will – instead of flipping back & forth & back & forth & back …

Ping?  eh, ok … iTunes – sometimes best to leave well enough alone.   I like(d) the little arrows next to the songs so when something is playing I can click the arrow and go to either

• the song in it’s location within the catalog (if you click the arrow next to the song from within a playlist, for example)
• the album in it’s location within the catalog (if you click the arrow next to the album from within a playlist)
• the artist in it’s location within the catalog (if you click the arrow next to the artist)

Ya, well that’s great, but first of all, they used to take you to the iTunes store unless you held the option key.  Ya, there was a fix to that.  A command to run in terminal so that when you click the arrow you are navigating within your OWN world instead of capitalistically being sucked into the iTunes store.  That was GREAT for getting around within your playlist.  A tune comes up that you like and – YEAH – gimmie more of that artist.  Click the arrow.

So now the arrows are gone, never mind reversed.  Want ‘em back?  Want to click an arrow and navigate your OWN collection?  (option click to go to the store).

1. QUIT iTunes
2. Run the following in terminal:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE

defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-link-arrows 1

defaults write com.apple.iTunes invertStoreLinks -bool YES

Done.

Launch iTunes.  Happy days are hear again.

All those that I set to send directly to facebook are PNG.  They are also 720 x 540 (or 540 x 720) whereas the photos kept on the camera are 2048 x 1536 (and the ones I have with a special 7 Megapixel app are 3180 x 2385!  Wicked.

Lightroom doesn’t like the PNG files.  Why?  That’s another story.

So I just wrote a quick action in Photoshop that is a “Save As” JPG.

Then I threw all my PNGs into a folder called _PNG tank and ran a batch on that folder and voila – done.

Answer:
Remove photos from iPhone using Image Capture
/Applications/Image Capture.app

HOW TO:

Within Image Capture:

• Select, “Delete after import”
• Select a target folder that makes sense to you – for me I made a folder called _iPhone pics to go inside my Pictures folder  /Users/<username>/Pictures/_iPhone pics
• In iTunes set to include in its sync the contents of this folder back to the iPhone  (I set to sync the “Pictures folder and click the tick box for this _iPhone pics folder (and a few others)).

So the result is that you can manage the photos on your computer and don’t have to be messing around so badly on the iPhone with individual deletes, etc.
Keep the photos on the iPhone that you want.  If you don’t want it to sync back, of course, remove the picture from the folder you set to sync and put it elsewhere.

I could stop there, but here is MY next step:

I import the photos into Lightroom using copy.  I send them to another folder called iPhone pics – but this one in with my REAL photos.  Now I have an archival copy – because unlike other cell phone pics, iPhone pics are quite good! So the photos that remain in the  originally mentioned iPhone pics folder become the fun/sync-with-iPhone photos and the the others are the real deal keep / process, etc.

Of course, this is a Mac solution, not PC.

I am new to the iPhone – yes, delayed gratification – I have waited almost the full 2 years for my previous cell phone contract to expire and then waited a bit more for the right time, the right deal.  Anyway, I have arrived and now it’s all “new” to me.  LOL

OK, the USB 2.0:  I purchased a 2-Port USB 2.0 PCMCIA Cardbus PC Card from Amazon.com.

I put it into the slot.  I connected the cable that goes from the middle of the card to one of the 1.x USB slots in the back – to supply POWER.  Good as gold – right as rain.  Done.

I consider these items must have / must use:

• Time Machine – software included with Leopard+ for backing up files.
• Backblaze – on line backup service (if you have decent internet connection speed)
• 1Password – password management software

Some new prospects:

• Dropbox – file synchronization & sharing service.  Allows you to rebuild from previous versions and create easy photo galleries.
• Jumpcut – saves your clipboard cuttings  - do you have any idea how empowering that is?

All this time, while my client was on the phone, I was exploring their brand new Windows 7 laptop – looking for the email client – such as outlook – so I could setup email on that new computer. I looked, and looked and looked. Am I dumb or what? I can’t find any email client. Feeling quite low IQ, I searched the internet. It seems Windows 7 doesn’t have an email client installed ….

Syncing Birthday Calendars with iPhone, Mobile Me & iCal

Concerning Birthday calendars, please note:
While a Birthday calendar may appear in the Subscriptions calendar of iCal, it is not a normal subscription calendar, and cannot be added to your iPhone/iPod touch.

This is the workaround I use:

1. Publish the Birthdays calendar in iCal to Mobile Me (right click and choose publish) and select ‘publish changes automatically’.
2. Email the calendar to yourself.
3. Open the email on your iPhone and subscribe to the calendar.
4. In Mobile Me, navigate to your calendar preferences and select ‘Show birthdays calendar’.

Now if you add a new contact on your Mac or iPhone with a birthday, it will automatically be added to your birthday calendars .

Extra Notes

Currently in iCal, there is no way of specifying which calendars you would like to sync, and as such, all your subscribed calendars will sync with your iPhone/iPod touch. Unfortunately, the only way to prevent this is to remove the calendar from iCal.
