Sometimes I have questions which really take me back to the basics.
Today I had a question from someone who is excellent at what they do, but not terribly literate when it comes to computers. And that’s ok, they don’t have to be, that’s why they have me to help them out Anyway, they simply wanted to manage a small (under 25 names) sub-group of their address book for sending once a month emails and not interested in a lot of fuss and not really keen to learn something new and potentially confusing. OK, well I know how I manage groups of that size – I make up a group in my Apple Address book and drop in whatever names I need – it takes 2 minutes. When I send I send to the group name and all the addresses pop into the “To” line. EZ as pie.

On the other side of the coin, some of my clients send to hundreds / thousands of targets. For that I use php scripted database driven lists through our server. So coming back to this small under 25 management – it was a challenge to get my thinking back to small & ultimately simple. Kind of refreshing actually!

So, the easiest / most basic way I could think of is simply to write the email addresses into a document (like a “Word” or “Publisher” or any text document), save that document, and then copy and paste the addresses into the “To” line of a new email when you want to go to send it.

This is very primiative, but simple and effective method.

Your text document with the email list would look like this:

Jane Doe <nowhere@yahoo.com>, Clyde Lovett <clyde@notarealdomain.com>, Charlie Brown <charlie.brown@fakecompany.com>, John Doe <john.doe@madeupname.com>

and so on, with each address entry separated by commas.

When you want to send an email and you you need the address just copy the whole kit and caboodle into the “To” line and off you go.

The email program will recognize the stuff in between the < > as the email address and the other name info is for your reference.

I can take people to any level of sophistication they want with this, but this is the most basic, easy method to manage a group

Let me know if you need more / different / more sophisticated or if this answers your question.

Cheers,

Clyde

The best way to remove photos, archive on computer, keep select photos on iPhone.

Answer:
Remove photos from iPhone using Image Capture
/Applications/Image Capture.app

HOW TO:

Within Image Capture:

Select, “Delete after import”

Select a target folder that makes sense to you – for me I made a folder called _iPhone pics to go inside my Pictures folder /Users/<username>/Pictures/_iPhone pics

In iTunes set to include in its sync the contents of this folder back to the iPhone (I set to sync the “Pictures folder and click the tick box for this _iPhone pics folder (and a few others)).

image capture settings

So the result is that you can manage the photos on your computer and don’t have to be messing around so badly on the iPhone with individual deletes, etc.
Keep the photos on the iPhone that you want. If you don’t want it to sync back, of course, remove the picture from the folder you set to sync and put it elsewhere.

I could stop there, but here is MY next step:

I import the photos into Lightroom using copy. I send them to another folder called iPhone pics – but this one in with my REAL photos. Now I have an archival copy – because unlike other cell phone pics, iPhone pics are quite good! So the photos that remain in the originally mentioned iPhone pics folder become the fun/sync-with-iPhone photos and the the others are the real deal keep / process, etc.

Of course, this is a Mac solution, not PC.

++++++

I am new to the iPhone – yes, delayed gratification – I have waited almost the full 2 years for my previous cell phone contract to expire and then waited a bit more for the right time, the right deal. Anyway, I have arrived and now it’s all “new” to me. LOL

But I do need USB 2.0!! The computer is fine for what I need on the road – it works fine! Like the love and lore of an aging truck (yes I have one of those, too) I have been compelled to just tinker with the unit I have and put my money elsewhere (like into food). For this laptop I have done the obvious – upgraded the RAM to 1 GB – I believe that is the max amount. When it failed I replaced the original 30 GB hard drive with a 120 GB hard drive, and so on.

PCMCIA card

OK, the USB 2.0: I purchased a 2-Port USB 2.0 PCMCIA Cardbus PC Card from Amazon.com.

I put it into the slot. I connected the cable that goes from the middle of the card to one of the 1.x USB slots in the back – to supply POWER. Good as gold – right as rain. Done.

Crestone Creations is happy to act as your representative and get your PayPal account going, or you can set it up on your own and we’ll just go in once it’s set up to create the code needed for your web site buttons & other professional customizations (like your logo on the checkout page, etc.). (you can change your password once we’re done).

Save yourself $$ - do these steps on your own:

Ok wait: Before you get started: Let us set up a special email address for your paypal account, such as paypal@youraccount.com with your domain name in place of <youraccount.com>

This will have the dual role of keeping any existing personal account on paypal separate from this new account AND will give us the ability to put a professional look to your transactions.

Go to https://www.paypal.com/

At the top of the page click the “Sign Up” link

From the 3 choices choose “Business” – click the “Get Started” button

From the payment solutions menu “I want to sign up for a payment solution:” choose “Website Payments Standard” and click “Continue”

Follow the prompts. It is all self-evident from that point.

Once you’re done, send us the logins and we will set up the payment buttons on your website.

Once we’re done you can change the password for the account if that makes you more comfortable, although we’re usually not interested in illegal and unethical behavior

So you can do this on your own up to this point, OR
We’re happy to set this up for you and save you the steps so you don’t HAVE to do it on your own. We’ll just need to know what kind of business you have (non-profit, sole proprietor, etc.) your official business name, official address, if non-profit then your non profit number, business phone number, bank account to where you want your $ to go, bank name, ABA number.
