Why should I use my domain name for email addressing?

Summary - the quick answer:

1. Stability. Your domain name is a constant and thus you teach your friends, family and clients one email and never have to change it again, EVER. Contrast to the email given by the ISP. - it will change when you go from one ISP to another. Thank you, ISP, this is handy if you have no domain name / hosting of your own, but if you have a domain name - use it! If you don't, you are not realizing the full potential of your domain name and hosting.

2. Branding. Chances are that if you have your own domain name that you have your own web site, too. And thus, chances are that you want people to know what that web site is! So what better way than to advertise it with each and every email that you send.

DISCUSSION:

With the rising use of email addresses it is important to consider long-term sustainable use of your email address. The vast majority of internet users use their email address provided by their ISP.

This article discusses each of these accounts, and the potential problems associated with them, and then presents the advantages of owning your own email address.

Email address provided by an ISP
Internet service providers ISPs, such as ctelco, fairpoint, olympus, earthlink, and amigo, all provide email accounts as a standard part of their service. That's great, and we should thank them for this service. The main problem with making use of the email address that your ISP provides, is that you become bound to your ISP - most ISPs will not allow you to shift to another ISP and retain your original email address (at least not without paying for a forwarding service).

Owning your own email address
Your domain name can be used forever - your ISP email will change every time you change Providers and your domain name is yours as long as you keep your account current and is location independent.
