What is Hosting?

What do I need to get a web site onto the internet?

  1. Domain name – the “web address” of your web site – like, “crestonehosting.com”
  2. Host (hosting, server) – computer where web pages live and are served, also where email accounts are created and where email is served.
  3. Web pages – the specially coded files served by the host

Crestone Creations provides ALL of these services for the benefit of our clients so that all of your services are efficiently and logically presented, managed and configured, under one roof.  For any issues you always know to whom you should turn :)

1. Domain Name:

The first step is to register a domain name. We have been handling domain name registration for our clients for more than a decade. CLICK HERE for more information on registration.

Domain names are convenient replacements to the underlying reference numbers or “IPs” (click here for more definitions).  Without domain names we’d have to use numbers to find the computer where your web site lives!!  An IP is the numerical address by which a location on the Internet is identified. Computers on the Internet use IP addresses to route traffic and establish connections among themselves. People generally use the human-friendly names made possible by the Domain Name System (DNS) and thus instead of using an IP to get to this web site, you used “crestonecreations.com.”

If you don’t have a domain name yet, send Crestone Creations the name of your business and some of your choices for a domain name and we will return information about availability and suggestions for your choice. Once you make the final decision, we will register the domain name for you and set it up with the proper [nameserver] information so that your domain name directs to your host, so that your contact information is current and so that you are protected from spam by using our email address – keeping your email private from spammers!

2. Hosting your website – Serving pages & emails & databases oh my! – To have a site on the internet you need to have a file hosted on a computer which is connected to the internet 24/7 and which can handle the bandwidth (traffic) of visitors to your site. The computer must be configured to “serve” your web pages and “serve” your email. This page that you are reading right now, explainhosting.html, is hosted on the Crestone Creations server.  Crestone Creations manages an internet connected computer for your hosting. Staffed 24x7x365, our trained and professional Network Operations Center (NOC) staff oversees the security and performance of our hosting facility with state of the art monitoring and surveillance tools.

3. Web pages – the coded computer files, served by your host, and interpreted by your browser (browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer) that we call web pages. The file that you are currently viewing is named explainhosting.html    Crestone Creations designs these web page files for you. These files are the pages which make up your site.

Other terms and concepts:

URL: A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the domain name plus the pathway on the host which leads to a specific page. The URL for this page is:
https://crestonecreations.com/support/hosting/

Storage – like the hard disk of your computer, this is how much file space you get. An average page is about 50K (this page is about 35K). 50 Megabytes gives you the space to place aprox 50,000 pages such as this one. We are now starting accounts with 200 MB, but please let us know if you need more space. Space usually gets eaten up by video and sound files.

1,000 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte (MB)
1,000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte (GB)

compare MB with Mb – click here

Bandwidth – relates to activity on your site. A typical hosting package offers 1 Gigabyte of bandwidth per month. That means you could access this page 60,000 times every month and stay below your quota. Need more? You can always get more! We’ll let you know if you go over! No worries mate!

internet – that wonderous linking (networking) of computers all around the world.from http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Glossary.html … the vast collection of interconnected networks that all use the TCP/IP protocols and that evolved from the ARPANET of the late 60’s and early 70’s. An “internet” (lower case i) is any computers connected to each other (a network), and are not part of the Internet unless the use TCP/IP protocols. An “intranet” is a private network inside a company or organization that uses the same kinds of software that you would find on the public Internet, but that is only for internal use. An intranet may be on the Internet or may simply be a network.
