Historic, nostalgic, memorable, and educational are some of the words that describe a visit to the Saguache (pronounced Sah-watch) County Museum. Walk into the past and learn from earlier generations. The museum gives you the opportunity to see the handmade survival tools of the area's pioneers and later tools that brought comfort into their lives. They used and cherished their possessions, passing them on to the next generation to save or use until they were worn out.
The history of Saguache, and our exhibits, are spiced with the stories of Otto Mears (railroad mogul), John Lawrence, Alferd Packer, Ute Native American Ouray and Chipeta; Spanish and European settlers, and the Valley's Native American tribes.
